**REMINDER**

Reminder to all of you that the awesome Ottawa Skiff GP is this weekend. We will have 10+ boats!

Pre-register here: http://www.osrf.ca/gp_files/gppreregister-2010.php .

There is a training day on the Friday (cost $50). I think some other boats will be there training.

See you there!

49er Canada and NE USA Fleet:

In less than 2 weeks, we will be having our second event of the season: the (in)famous Ottawa Skiff Grand Prix, hosted by the always friendly Nepean Sailing Club in Ottawa, ON, Canada from June 5 to 6, 2010.

This regatta is always fun and friendly. There is also a rum tent on Saturday and also what appears to be a beer sponsor this year! So come on down with a new or old rig and race against not only a fleet of 10+ 49er’s but also against 10 or 20 International 14’s.

You can find the regatta website here: http://www.osrf.ca/gp_files/gpbasepage-2010.php

After a very successful Icebreaker (with 8 boats) to open the season, we expect to have 12+ boats, so it should be a good event. That’s not even counting any of the US guys, either! That’s why you’re copied in (Froto &  Rome; Mick Armstrong; Peter Brighton; Carl & Pete; Vlasta; Dave Dickerson; Brian DeBrincat; Mike Rivlin; Jason & Clay; Ryan & Trevor; Jeff Steele; Pete Kitt). We want you US East Coast guys to come up and race with us. This should be a great event with a minimum of 10 49er’s, if not 15 or possibly 20! It doesn’t matter if you have an old rig, come and race! You’ll still learn tonnes (rig setup and boat-handling).

Additionally, on the Friday June 4, there will have an “open” training session with a coach from the Ontario Sailing Team. The training will commence at 10 AM and cost $50, and all are welcome to attend. Please see the regatta website if you’re interested.

Finally, here’s who we’re expecting for the OSGP:

CAN 123 – Dubreucq / Parekh
CAN 1075 – Frost / Arbuckle
CAN 946 – Mori / Barnes
CAN 819 – Soosalu / Blumer
CAN 501 – Loffree / McCullough
CAN 1131 – Waldie / Williams
CAN 603 – Brodeur / TBD
CAN 807 – Kmiec / Little
CAN 821 – Cook / Blake
CAN 239 – Berry / Kartner
CAN 943 – Crossley / Crossley
CAN 608 – Brazier / Norman
CAN 1096 – Chouinard / Ehvert

This event is part of our Canadian East Coast GP Circuit and counts for GP points towards the half rudder trophy from Cushman Wakefield & Lepage.

So you better all be there (with new or old rigs)!

On Canada’s Victoria Day weekend, we had a great turnout for the first regatta in the 49er Canada Series. The 2010 TS&CC Icebreaker regatta drew 8 49er’s (6 new rigs and 2 old rigs) for a solid two days of racing.

Day 1 was cloudy and drizzly with a light to medium Easterly breeze. Gooderham / Hogan and Dubreucq / Parekh traded bullets. Meanwhile, Farmer / Williams scored a surprise 2nd in the 2nd race of the series, before tearing their kite to shreds at the finish, forcing them to miss the 3rd race as they went in for repairs. The day continued on with an oscillating breeze, forcing competitors to be on their toes. Mori / Barnes showed some promise as they acclimatized themselves to skiff racing. In total, we had 6 races on the first day, before the fleet went to shore in time to watch the NHL’s Eastern Conference finals at the TS&CC bar.

the beautiful skiffs

Day 2 didn’t look good right from the start. It was sunny, hot and foggy. The races were postponed on shore for about 30 minutes, until a light sea breeze filled from the Southeast, at about 6 knots. Just after the start of the day’s first race, a thick fog patch rolled into the racing area, obscuring our view of the windward mark. No one could tell where it was! All you could do was keep tacking until you got close enough to see it! At times during the race you couldn’t see any boats around you. This race definitely necessitated the use of your compass and watches! Dubreucq / Parekh won the first race, and the Crossley brothers pulled out  a surprise bullet in the 2nd race, taking advantage of a shift on the first beat and a shortened course in the dying sea breeze. After waiting for 30 minutes in thick fog which eventually cleared (taking the breeze with it), the RC abandoned the balance of the scheduled 14 races and sent us in for prizegiving.

If you have a boat and are looking for a crew / skipper, please let Trevor know.

If you are a “spare” crew or skipper and would like to sail 49er this season, please also let Trevor know.

We are trying to get as many boats as possible on the line this year.

Thanks

.

Spring is definitely here! There has already been plenty of 49er-ing in Toronto Harbour. It also seems like everyone is getting their boats out of the shed. Here is a picture (albeit blurry) of Dubs / Parekh in Toronto Harbour in April.

And of course, Ladha and Inkpen have been representing us over in Europe in the last two World Cup evnets in Spain and France.

If you have some stories or info of what spring preparations you’re doing, please email (trevor@49er.ca) us and we can post it on the site!

Thanks

Just a heads up to everyone that the G20 will be meeting in Toronto from June 26 – 27 (precisely during the RCYC skiff regatta). So the downtown core will be complete mayhem and closed down.

The regatta site, however, should be unaffected.

See you there!

49er Canada and NE USA Fleet:

In less than 4 weeks, we will be having our first event of the season: the famous Icebreaker regatta. Luckily, due to the warm and dry spring we’ve have thus far, it should be much warmer than previous editions!

This year the Canadian Olympic Classes Queensway Audi Icebreaker Regatta will be held at the Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club on May 22 & 23, 2010 on Toronto’s beautiful Humber Bay. This is your official reminder to get the boat out of the shed, dust it off, get it rigged and come sailing!

You can find the Notice of Race here: http://tscc.net/tsccjoomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=159:2010-icebreaker-regatta&catid=37:TSCC%20Regattas&Itemid=83

We expect to have 10+ boats, so it should be a good event.

Additionally, on the afternoon of Friday May 21, we will have an “open” training session with a coach from the National Sports Sailing Centre of Ontario. The training will commence with a 1 PM briefing and be 2 – 3 hours on water with coach Dan Cunningham. The cost of the clinic will be in the $20 to $40 range, and all are welcome to attend. Be ready to sail at 1 pm. Please let us know if you’re interested.

Finally, here’s who we’re expecting for Icebreaker’s:

CAN 123 – Dubreucq / Parekh
CAN 1075 – Frost / Arbuckle
CAN 946 – Mori / Barnes
CAN 819 – Soosalu / Blumer
CAN 501 – Loffree / Fischer
CAN 1131 – Farmer / Williams
CAN 603 – Brodeur / TBD
CAN 807 – Kmiec / Little
CAN 821 – Cook / Blake
CAN 239 – Berry / Kartner
CAN 943 – Crossley / Crossley
CAN 608 – Brazier / TBD
CAN 1096 – Chouinard / Ehvert

In theory, this is an ISAF Grade 3 event for the 49er class, so you can get ranking points! This event is also part of our Canadian East Coast GP Circuit and counts for GP points towards the half rudder trophy from Cushman Wakefield & Lepage.

So you better all be there (with new or old rigs)!
