49er North America:

Please advise me of any and all parts that you anticipate that you may need during the 2010 season. A large sea-freight order will be going in mid-March for delivery to NA in the spring. An email from you does not equate to an order (there is no commitment), I just want to be sure that I can serve you well during the racing months and stock the parts that everyone needs.

Thanks

49er North America:

I need your opinions on some new regatta ideas for 2010. Here they are:

 “Kingston Unlimited”

This would be a sort-of revival of the old Kingston Unlimited that used to happen earlier in the decade. However, it would have later dates: July 24 – 25, 2010. This would be at KYC in conjunction with 29er Canadians. I think that we could launch from POH…

 “49er US Nationals”

At the class meeting in Florida, we agreed to go west for one regatta if they came east for ours. We originally thought that the Ronstan 18’ International Regatta would work for us, but it conflicts with CORK / 49er Cdns. There is an opening at The Gorge July 31 – August 1, 2010. The i14’s are also considering these dates (we would sail together). This would become an almost annual event at The Gorge, leading up to 2013 Worlds in SF.

Please email me back with your thoughts…

After a few days off following Miami OCR we packed up shop and got out of Miami for a couple weeks of trianing in Kemah Texas with 2 of the American teams. With three boats out on the warter in a zero pressure enviroment we were free to try almost anything to gain little speed advantages here and there. With a full range of wind conditions we got a chance to clear our heads after a dissapointing start to the year and get back to basics.

Due to a less than ideal weather outlook for the next couple weeks in Texas, with near freezing temperatures and little to no wind, the camp was called to an early close. Both Ian and I are taking time off now after a long three months of sailing.

Here are some details that have been bounced around by email:

Billy Gooderham, Feb 19:

Hi Guys,

In the interest of getting things planned out sooner rather than later I want to get a sense of what everbody’s plans are.

Firstly I know that me and Hogan and Gordo have been talking about doing a camp in early May in Weymouth agian. It was a great camp last year and a good way to kick of the European season (for those of us not doing Palma or Heyeres). I feel like the more guys on the water the better the camp will be.

If you guys can give me any info on who is interested, and what dates work for the people who have jobs? Also who we want to get to come in and coach it, is anyone apposed to having Nigel come in agian?  Once we have a sense of numbers and dates we can get things moving in respect to booking the time off in the house as well as seeing if we can use the foundation VSR.

From there is Holland. Who is going? How are people planning on getting boats from Weymouth to Holland? I am assuming that Trev and hunter you guys are planning on using your trailer. I know that Hogan and I are looking into Euro Lease this summer. What is the intrest on splitting gas and towing behind our car?

Finally is Europeans in Poland. I am assuming that everybody is going. Once agian I am interested in what peoples plans are in respect to getting boats to Poland as well as what peoples perspective arrival dates are?  I know me and hogan are tentavily planning on making the long haul from Holland. Anyone want to join us? Also what the intrest is in getting a coach(possibly Dan or Cook if we can swing it)?

Anyways that is all I can think of for now. If yall think of anything I have left out feel free to speak up. I think the more we can get this planned out together, it will become a whole lot easier and cheaper for all of us.

Trevor Parekh, Feb 20:

Guys,
It seems like May 15 – 20 is about right for time frame. DLR is 26 – 30.

I would def like to do the camp. I just need agreement from Dubs. We will not do DLR. However we will probably charter our boat for DLR (to the Mexicans).

As you all know, Hunter and I co-own a trailer that is presently in Weymouth. Matt and I plan to do Europeans, so will need a ride for our boat / trailer to Poland after DLR. Therefore we will gladly split gas/transport charges with whomever drives it there (and back). So Billy if you get a vehicle big enough that you can car-top a 49er then you could split your charges with us and Gord/H.

Good initiative BG. Keep in touch, all.

Ian Hogan, Feb 21:

That week sounds good but hopefully a few of us can be training in Weymouth longer.  Maybe run a camp from the 10th to the 21st, go to Holland on the 22nd.  This is similar to what we did last year and chances are there will be a couple days that are unsailable.

What is everyones plan between Europeans/Sail For Gold?  Maybe get another camp going in Weymouth right after?

Gordon Cook, Feb 22:

think we are in for training May 10 -21st.  Hiring Nigel seems like a good idea at this point..  We could also try to get Simon Hiscocks to come down for a day or two.

We are looking for transport as well..  If the van isn’t too full we could use a ride to Medemblik and the Europeans, otherwise will find another way to get the boat there.

Thanks for getting in touch about this stuff.

Jon Ladha, Feb 23:

Dan and I are in for Weymouth camp May 10-21st, but we will not be doing Delta LLoyd this year.  We will also be very interested in doing another camp there right after Europeans.  Once camp dates are confirmed, and we can create a budget and agenda for the camp, then we can confirm our participation in the training, which we are already looking forward to.

Billy Gooderham, Feb 24:

okay guys,

Here is what i am getting out of all this:

firstly everybody seems interested in the weymouth camp may 10-21 (trev and dubs joining in part way through). also everybody seems agreed on nigel as a coach.

second trev and dubs and lahda and dan are out for Delta lloyd. Gordo and Hunter are in.

Once we figure out the euro lease we can figure out travel arrangements (driving to holland and euros) as well as transport for boats.

Keen sailors needed!

MONTREAL, QC: Quebec boat builders PS2000 and 49er.ca have just announced that they will be sponsoring a new 29er sailing team. The team will be based out of Montreal’s Pointe Claire Yacht Club, located on Lake St Louis. Numbers are not known yet, but it is expected that half a dozen boats will qualify for the team.

This team will be a unique opportunity for sailors to get their feet wet in skiff racing. PS2000 is offering three charter 29er’s for the summer season for only $1500 (+ taxes). This is a great, low-cost way to get into the 29er class. There is, however, a catch:

  • Sponsored boats must agree to attend all five 29er East Coast Grand Prix events in 2010, including CORK International / 29er North Americans
  • Send monthly reports with pictures
  • Carry sponsor logos on mainsails
  • Promote 29er racing throughout Canada and USA

 That’s it!

Boats will be available May 1st, 2010 and should be returned on August 20th, 2010. There will be an option to buy (at reduced price) at the end of the season. Sailors are responsible for the maintenance of the boats.

The team will be coached by an experienced skiff sailor and will also benefit from high-level guest coaching sessions. Standard race team fees apply as well. Sailors are also responsible for their regatta expenses.

This is a great opportunity for young, enthusiastic sailors that want to go fast, to learn, and to experience sailing at the top level on a national and international scene. “I think this is a good idea. The last time this was done, it went on for about 5 good years and brought back 2 Gold Medals at the 2005 Canada Summer Games and Canada’s top world result to date,” commented Tyler Bjorn, Quebec Sailing Team Head Coach.

“The idea behind this program is to get kids into sailing skiffs again. We want teens sailing skiffs and going fast, and ultimately moving up to the Olympic 49er class, or 29erXX. No one wants to go slow,” said Canadian 49er Class President, Trevor Parekh.

Interested teams or athletes should contact Trevor Parekh at trevor@49er.ca . Those that already have a 29er and are looking for a race team to join should also contact Trevor. This is your chance to get into skiffs with no major financial commitment!

The first Miami Olympic Regatta with the new boats and carbon rigs has finished.  This year, there were just about twice as many boats as last year and some great competition.  Oscillating northerly winds from 6-12 kts were the dominate wind conditions for the competition, but it started out with a strong breeze from the south east.  Our main focus for the event was 1. Starting.   2.  High gain areas around the course.

Right away, our starting obviously improved.  We held and defended our position very well, and we were often able to fully accelerate, with confidence, at 8 seconds.  The only downside about our starts for this event was that at times we were a little too aggressive because we had to eat 1 ocs, and 1 bfd throughout the event which is unacceptable, but overall we got a good handle on our new starting style and routine.

We are quite confident in our speed, so it became more important to shift a lot of attention to the race.  That being said, our “autopilot” still needs much work.  The general theme for the upwinds was to pick a side, but it was important not to get so committed due to the shifts, but the first boats on each side were in the top five at the windward mark.  The downwinds were a different story.  Although many people in the front of the pack preferred the gybe hoist, they lost a good bit of time trying to soak past the lay line  boats before they got the nice gust that was often out there.  We found that a straight set and an early gybe would be a little faster as long as we trapped extra hard for the conditions in order reach the gust.  Again, we have great speed and we often passed boats downwind.  We had some single digit finishes, the best being 3rd, and we were leading two races.  We also had some pretty deep races, but overall, it is clear that we have great potential.

Gordo and Hunter were the top Canadians for this event.  They were quite good at hitting the shifts and puffs, and it seems they handled tactics very well in order to carry out their strategy.  They really had a great last day in the final series, with a 2nd in one of the races, putting them in the top ten, and the medal race….nice work boys.  As for the rest of the Canadians, there were some ups and downs, but everyone demonstrated potential and showed that with hard, smart work, Canada will be a power house in the 49er on the world stage…soon!

Overall results (Canada)

9th   Gordo/Hunter

20th Billy/Ian

22nd  Jon/Dan

25th   Matt/Trev

31st Rob/Kevin

32nd Rob/Tom
